Xenochrophis flavipunctatus

The Yellow-spotted Keelback (Xenochrophis flavipunctatus) is an active, diurnal water snake of Thai rice paddies and canals, harmlessly hunting fish, frogs and tadpoles. When first handled it may musk and flatten its body in defence, but it settles quickly. A lively, harmless semi-aquatic species ideal for intermediate keepers wanting an animated display.

In the Wild

Habitat
Semi-aquatic. Rice paddies, pond margins, streams, irrigation canals and marshy lowland areas. 0 – 600 m. Widespread throughout Thailand.
Wild Diet
Fish, frogs, tadpoles & small aquatic invertebrates. Active diurnal aquatic forager.

Captive Care

Captive Diet
Whole defrosted fish or pre-killed frogs. Every 5 – 7 days. Rarely accepts mice.
Temperature
24 – 28 °C ambient — 22 °C cool end
Humidity
75 – 90 %. Large permanent water section required.
UV Requirements
Moderate (diurnal). UVI 1.0 – 2.0. UVB recommended.
Enclosure
Semi-aquatic terrestrial. Min 90 × 45 × 45 cm with permanent shallow water area.
Temperament
Active and curious. May musk when first handled. Settles quickly. Good intermediate species.
