The White-eyed Crocodile Skink (Tribolonotus novaeguineae) is an armoured, dragon-like lizard from New Guinea rainforest floors, unique among skinks for audibly squeaking when stressed. Shy, cryptic and entirely harmless, this captive-bred insect-eater thrives in a moist, cool bioactive setup and can live in pairs or trios. A charming, prehistoric-looking species for attentive keepers.

Habitat
Terrestrial. Tropical rainforest floor near streams, leaf litter and rotting logs. High humidity riparian habitat in New Guinea. 0 – 800 m.
Wild Diet
Invertebrates — earthworms, isopods, crickets, small snails & beetles.

Captive Care

Captive Diet
Live or fresh-killed earthworms, crickets, isopods & waxworms. Every 2 – 3 days. Calcium supplement essential.
Temperature
24 – 27 °C ambient — 22 °C cool end
Humidity
85 – 95 %. Daily misting; permanently damp substrate. No basking required.
UV Requirements
Very low (crepuscular / nocturnal). UVI 0 – 0.5. Low UVB beneficial for D3 synthesis.
Enclosure
Terrestrial. Min 60 × 45 × 30 cm per pair. Moist bioactive substrate; cork bark hides. Avoid overheating.
Temperament
Shy and cryptic. Vocalises (squeaks) when stressed — unique among skinks. Pair or trio housing possible.
