The Halmahera Blue-tongued Skink (Tiliqua gigas) is a chunky, intelligent omnivore from Indonesia that flashes a startling blue tongue to bluff predators. Captive-bred and confident with regular interaction, it eats everything from insects to greens and fruit, making it remarkably easy to feed. With a warm basking setup, it is a superb, handleable pet lizard.

Habitat
Terrestrial. Tropical forest floor, forest edges, scrubland and plantations. Halmahera Island, North Maluku, Indonesia. 0 – 600 m.
Wild Diet
Omnivore — insects, snails, small rodents, fruits, berries, flowers & plant matter.

Captive Care

Captive Diet
Varied diet: insects (crickets, roaches), defrosted pinky mice, leafy greens, fruits & commercial omnivore food. Feed adults 3× per week.
Temperature
26 – 28 °C ambient — 22 °C cool end
Humidity
60 – 80 %. Misting 3× per week; water bowl always available.
UV Requirements
Moderate (diurnal basker). UVI 1.0 – 3.0. T5 6% UVB recommended. Basking spot 32 – 35 °C.
Enclosure
Terrestrial. Min 120 × 60 × 45 cm. Deep substrate for digging; prominent basking branch or flat rock under heat source.
Temperament
Confident and handleable with regular interaction. Can be defensive when young — blue tongue display is bluff.
