The Red-headed Krait (Bungarus flaviceps) is a spectacular snake-eater wearing a fiery red head and tail against a dark body, restricted to pristine primary rainforest in southern Thailand. Rarely encountered and slow-moving by night, it is docile when undisturbed yet potently neurotoxic. A demanding, jaw-dropping species strictly for expert keepers only.

In the Wild

Habitat
Terrestrial. Primary and old-growth lowland tropical rainforest only, 0 – 800 m. Rarely found in degraded or secondary habitat. Southern Thai-Malay peninsula.
Wild Diet
Primarily other snakes and lizards (ophiophagous). Slow-moving nocturnal hunter in primary forest.

Captive Care

Captive Diet
Pre-killed snakes or lizards. Adults every 7 – 10 days. Challenging feeder — live prey may be needed to initiate feeding.
